Self-service ads beget Self-service ad removal

I found Daily Sonic today via a new subscriber to Photojojo*.

Daily Sonic is a really cool podcast split into ‘columns’ by individual contributors. You can listen to an entire episode or just play an individual column, like this great segment by Adam Varga called 30 Second Life Stories. (He walks around and asks random New Yorkers for their 30 second life story, I love it.)

The episodes feature audio ads, which you can buy cheaply by the impression (no minimums!) via their self-service ad system. So advertisers can support their work.

More interesting, I found out that they allow listeners to support their work by subtracting advertisements. A self-service system, similar to the one they’ve set up for advertisers, allows users to subtract any arbitrary number of ads from their listening experience. Each “subtract” costs 6 cents.

Kind of a cool alternative to an ad-free subscription option. I wonder if more content providers will adopt this model.

* By the way, if you haven’t gotten a gift for Mother’s Day yet, Priya, our first guest contributor, wrote a great piece on 5 Great Photo Gifts for Mom in our latest newsletter.
