iCaved — p.s. The old firmware’s still out there.

I gave into the reality distortion field and plunked down for a phone that does less, and does it slower than the 3-year-old phone it replaces. But oh, does it look pretty doing what it does.

For what it’s worth, I asked a salesperson at the Apple Store in Palo Alto if they had any units with the old (hackable) firmware in stock. He said no way, and he doubted anyone did at this point, “You can flash back to the old firmware if you have it, or a friend has it. But it will void your warranty.” (He later told me there might be AT&T stores with slow-moving stock.)

I decided not to buy one. When I changed my mind, I picked one up at the Apple Store in San Francisco. And surprise! The firmware’s 1.0.2 (old).

I’m guessing you find more value in jailbreaking then having an updated OS?

Why did you buy one exactly?

I’m still relatively anti-iPhone, no matter how many of my tech peers get it. I would much rather have an iPod touch…much cooler in my perspective!

You can check the 4th and 5th digit of the serial number for the week code. Week 37 or lower and it’s the old firmware. Regardless, I believe even the new firmware has been unlocked…

jasmeet — some of the native apps people have developed are really amazing. I haven’t installed any yet, nor have I updated the firmware. I’d like to wait and see if Apple adds to-dos and note-syncing after the next Mac OS is released.

Alicia — it’s actually fun to use!

Sarfaraz — interesting! Mine is 37, guess I was just on the cusp!

Todo items? Either way welcome to the dark side

Yeah….I guess so…I have played with Ian’s iPhone for a few minutes here and there, but I guess I just don’t “get” it. :)
